Positive Mood Clinics

The Positive Mood Enhancement Clinic and the Post Stroke Mood Recovery Program have been conducted at the Cairnmillar Institute on a regular basis from 2005.  Both are group based programs, and are led by Dr Francis Macnab who has over 40 years of experience in the treatment of mind and emotions.  The Mood Enhancement Clinic is open to the general population and its aim is to enhance quality of life and relationships through effective mood management skills.  Participants can expect to learn about the impact of negative moods on the whole body system, the benefits of positive moods and how to sustain them, as well as about practical skills to reduce the experience of negative emotions and enhance engagement in life.  The next 3 week program will be conducted on Monday 7th, 14th and 21st of April from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.  The cost is $25 per session.

The Post Stroke Mood Recovery Program has been specifically designed for people who have experienced a stroke. The purpose of the program is to help stroke survivors cope with frustration, anger, worry, fear, isolation and feelings of hopelessness related to lifestyle changes and losses experienced following stroke.  While it is widely recognised that physical rehabilitation is a necessary focus for recovery, emotional recovery from a stroke is not well recognised, understood or catered for within the community.  Thus, this program also aims to research the emotional needs of stroke survivors and investigate the effectiveness of the mood management strategies presented. Based on previous evaluations, participants have found it highly beneficial, with the majority reporting a greater understanding of their moods, improved coping strategies and increased ability to manage negative emotions.

We have been able to run the program free of charge for stroke survivors thanks to generous donations from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Fund and the Boroondara Community Grants Program, The Miller Foundation, Bentleigh Moorabbin Rotary Club. The next FREE 3 week program will be conducted on Monday 7th, 14th and 21st of April from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
