We are very pleased and excited to be able to offer three excellent COVID-19 Funded Graduate Certificate Short Courses in Psychology and Counselling as part of the Australian Government’s Job-ready Graduates package. The courses are designed as a stand-alone Graduate Certificate that can be completed in 6 months full time or 12 months part time; however, successful completion will also lead to eligibility to further study at Graduate Diploma, Bachelor (Honours), and in some instances Masters level.

FEES 

Fees and Funding 
Due to the government funding each course will be significantly subsidised to a total cost of $3600 for all 4 units of study (only $900 per unit) if completed in 2021. That’s a significant saving for students of at least $7600 to $10800 for these courses. Places are limited so apply now to avoid disappointment.  


Our Courses

Graduate Certificate in Pre-Professional Psychology Honours (Honours or 4th year)

This course is designed for students who have completed an APAC accredited undergraduate degree or honours degree needing to refresh or improve their original Honours results to take the next step into Masters or 4+2 psychology career pathway.

Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate will allow entry into the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from which successful completion with good grades will lead to entry into the professional Masters courses. The Master of Professional Psychology and the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) are two of the pathways to professional practice in Psychology that Cairnmillar offers.

Location: Online  Intake: February 2021 (part time) and July 2021 (full time)
Delivery: Full Time and Part Time Fees: $900 per unit with Commonwealth supported places (CSPs)
Duration: 6 Months Full Time or 1 Year Part Time HECS-HELP: Available if eligible

Course Duration and Structure

This six months full time or one year part time program consists of 50 credit points across a total of four units of study. Students may choose any four units listed below, subject to availability.

HON401 Professional Practice and Professional Ethics
HON403 Psychological Assessment
HON404 Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence
HON407 Developmental Psychopathology Across the Lifespan
HON402 Research Methods

 

Admission Criteria

Applicants must have completed an APAC undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification, within the last ten years. Or an APAC accredited fourth year or equivalent qualification completed at any time.

Graduate Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply ethical codes, legislation, and professional standards to issues relevant to professional practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical and empirical bases underpinning the development and application of psychological assessment and intervention.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of developmental psychopathology.
  • Have the capacity to critically consider the impact of sociocultural and developmental factors in professional practice.
  • Demonstrate sophisticated oral and written communication skills.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students applying for this program may enter into a process in which they may be granted credit or partial credit towards the qualification in recognition of previous experience where an equivalence of earlier learning can be established.

Credit transfer for an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) course, is only applicable for recently completed APAC accredited postgraduate programs.

Credit or partial credit is not granted in recognition of knowledge or skills gained through work or life experience.

Graduate Certificate in Psychological Science (Undergraduate Major - Bridging)

This course has been designed for students looking to take the first or early steps on a psychology career pathway - Students with any undergraduate (Bachelors) degree in a discipline other than psychology or those seeking to improve results from an APAC accredited undergraduate degree for Honours entry (additional study may be required if original degree is not APAC accredited).

Students who successful complete the Graduate Certificate can apply for admission into the Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science with recognition for prior learning (RPL). Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma, students may wish to apply for entry to a Bachelor of Psychology Honours Degree.

Graduates are able to obtain work in a variety of industries including health and community services, human resources and product design/marketing.

Graduate Certificate of Counselling

The Graduate Certificate of Counselling and Psychotherapy introduces students to the foundational concepts and skills required to practice counselling. The course provides training in specific counselling modalities, enabling students to develop a foundational understanding, communication and practical skills required when working with people in a wide range of different professions. When completing this course, students will be able to add specific counselling knowledge and skills to their present work-related skills and to enhance self-understanding.

Students are trained in the application of counselling skills through in-class peer practice, a discussion of case material, participating in intensive and regular small reflective group practice and clinical observation.

This course has been designed for students with any undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of study, skills and experience in any discipline looking to enter the counselling and psychotherapy study and career pathway.

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate can apply for admission into the Graduate Diploma of Counselling and Psychotherapy. Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma may lead to entry to a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Graduates will learn additional communication and relational skills that may enhance their current work skills. Employment in community health and community services organisations will be possible.

This one-year part-time program that consists of 50 credit points. Students undertake a total of four units of study.

Graduate Learning Outcomes

Students who satisfactorily complete the course will have achieved advanced knowledge and skills in the following areas of study:

  • Knowledge of the range of counselling theories and practice.
  • Understanding the importance of establishing the therapeutic relationship.
  • The capacity to relate in a way to facilitate change.
  • An awareness of the impact of the self on others and the development of relational intelligence, sensitivity, resilience and respect.
  • The capacity to be self-reflective and learn from experience.
  • Understand the impact of gender, sexual identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, class, religion, race and ethnicity on therapy.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students may only be given credit for any coursework if it is from a successfully completed approved course at the appropriate Australian AQF postgraduate level.
