Development Across the Lifespan (PCN101)

Study Mode: Face-to-Face - Hawthorn East, VIC, Australia  Intake: July 2022
Delivery: Part Time  Fees: $1,250 + $250 (admin fee) + GST
Duration: 3 hours a week for 12 weeks, over a 14 week period Application Type: Domestic only

Development Across the Lifespan is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Bachelor of Psychology and Counselling. This unit provides students with a thorough understanding of human development. Students will learn the key theories of human development and consider the biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of individuals from the prenatal period to the final stages of life. You will also gain familiarity with the methodologies used to answer important questions relevant to the field of developmental psychology.

Development Across the Lifespan would suit those with an interest in psychology, or human-service professionals wanting to deepen their knowledge of developmental psychology. Taught at Bachelor level (AQF 7), you will have the choice as to whether you undertake assessments in this unit or not. Those undertaking assessments may use this unit as a credit towards the Bachelor of Psychology and Counselling at The Cairnmillar Institute. Or, you can enrol directly into this degree for a Semester 2 start!*

Please note, single subject enrolment does not guarantee students a place in a Cairnmillar program of study. Eligibility criteria and recognition of prior learning restrictions do apply. For all enquiries, please contact to our Education team.

Ethical Paradigms and Philosophy (PCN102)

Duration: 3 hours a week for 12 weeks, over a 14 week period Application Type: Domestic only

Ethical Paradigms and Philosophy is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Bachelor of Psychology and Counselling. This unit emphases the personal and professional competencies and attributes required to practice ethically and legally in the fields of psychology and counselling. Awareness of one's values, as well as the development of ethical mindfulness, and an integrated ethical stance are central to this unit. You will work through case studies, and examine a variety of professional situations in class to increase your ethical decision-making skills. Skill development includes understanding duty of care, knowing how to work with confidentiality, informed consent and practice boundaries. You are encouraged to read widely and think deeply in this unit.

This unit would suit human-service professionals wanting to deepen their skills and knowledge of ethical practice as it relates to the psychology and counselling professions, or those who have an interest in counselling or psychology as a profession. Taught at Bachelor level (AQF 7), students will have a choice as to whether they undertake assessments in this unit or not. Those undertaking assessment may use this unit as a credit towards the Bachelor of Psychology and Counselling at The Cairnmillar Institute. Existential Psychotherapy and the Group Process (CAP506)

Duration: 3 hours a week for 12 weeks, over a 14 week period Application Type: Domestic only

Existential Psychotherapy and the Group Process is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. This unit is taught in the format of an experiential group, with a focus on relationship and its connection to theory. The purpose of this highly experiential unit is to advance the students’ intellectual and personally located knowledge of the various ways that the European and American schools of existential psychotherapy have both challenged traditional psychological frameworks of therapy and the person and opened new possibilities for the way psychotherapy might be understood and practiced.  The themes of death, freedom, responsibility, isolation and meaninglessness will be explored as central concepts for the psychotherapist as they strive to examine human existence and the inevitable dilemmas of living in the world.   

Taught at Master level (AQF 9), you will have the choice as to whether you undertake assessments in this unit or not. Those undertaking assessments may use this unit as a credit towards the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy at The Cairnmillar Institute.

Health Psychology (CLN601)

Delivery: Part Time  Fees: $4,373.25 + $250 (admin fee) + GST
Duration: 3 hours a week for 12 weeks, over a 14 week period Application Type: Domestic only

Health Psychology is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) and the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) programs. As such, this unit has pre-requisites of “a four year, or three year plus a fourth year, APAC accredited sequence in psychology within the last ten years”. Applicants will be required to upload a copy of their transcript to represent this. For more information, please see the admission criteria listed in the course pages. 

This unit focuses on the field of health psychology. It begins with an overview of the theory underpinning psychological factors in health and illness. It will include a focus on biopsychosocial factors and their impact on commonly presenting issues in health psychology contexts. In addition, this unit prepares students to understand and manage the impact of physical health issues and the importance of health promotion and education in community-based counselling organisations and in public and private psychological practice.

Key Competencies in Brief Dynamic Psychotherapy is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. 

Brief dynamic psychotherapy is widely accepted as an effective treatment method for a broad spectrum of problems. By exploring repetitive patterns of interpersonal conflict and revealing the deeper meaning beneath current problems, this method serves as a short-term effective distillation of key psychodynamic concepts and allows clients to make significant changes in both their intrapersonal and interpersonal styles of relating. This unit offers in-depth training in the core competencies and theoretical components of the approach.

Trauma, Loss and Grief Therapy (CAP510)

Duration: 3 hours a week for 12 weeks, over a 14 week period Application Type: Domestic only

Trauma, Loss and Grief Therapy is offered both as a single unit, or as part of the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. The aim of this subject is to examine the phenomenology of traumatic stress experience, the theories that explain it and various selected approaches to its treatment, including loss- and grief-related aspects. The unit covers cognitive / meaning-making, emotional, somatosensory, and interpersonal aspects of traumatic experience, as well as diagnostic categories and approaches to formulation which are often applied to such experiences. Treatment approaches covered are centred around the self-trauma model (in the textbook), but also touches on emotion-focussed, sensorimotor, and schema therapy approaches.  

Taught at Master level (AQF 9), you will have the choice as to whether you undertake assessments in this unit or not. Those undertaking assessments may use this unit as a credit towards the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy at The Cairnmillar Institute.
