The aim of this subject is to examine the phenomenology of traumatic stress experience, the theories that explain it and various selected approaches to its treatment, including loss- and grief-related aspects. The unit covers cognitive / meaning-making, emotional, somatosensory, and interpersonal aspects of traumatic experience, as well as diagnostic categories and approaches to formulation which are often applied to such experiences. Treatment approaches covered are centred around the self-trauma model (in the textbook), but also touches on emotion-focussed, sensorimotor, and schema therapy approaches.
