Mental Health First Aid

by | Oct 31, 2018

Approximately 20% of Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Completing a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Course will help you to develop the skills to support a friend, family member or co-worker.

The two day MHFA course is available in two workshops, teaching adults (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to either adults OR adolescents who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.

The 12 hour Standard MHFA course is targeted for adults to assist other adults.

The 14 hour Youth MHFA course is targeted to assist adolescents. This would be beneficial for adults who work, live or care for adolescents such as school staff, parents, sports coaches, community group leaders and youth workers. Please note: this course is not appropriate for adolescents to attend.

The course teaches participants how to use an evidence-based action plan to assist people who are:

  • developing a mental health problem, including depression and anxiety, psychosis, substance use problems, and eating disorders (in youth course only),
  • experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem, or
  • in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Mental health crisis situations covered in the course include:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury (deliberate self-harm)
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug and alcohol abuse
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours.

Mental Health First Aid Training Can Make a Difference

MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, as well as confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. Research has shown that MHFA training is associated with:

Knowledge: improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies.

Confidence: confidence in providing first aid to a person experiencing a mental health problem.

De-Stigmatising: decreases in stigmatising attitudes.

Increased Support: increases in the amount and type of support provided to others.

Learn how you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference to your community.
