DESCRIPTION:ASIST – the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop!\nWe strive to create safer communities by providing training to increase awareness and prevent suicide. Our highly experienced\, registered trainers deliver the internationally recognised LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop to equip individuals to assist those at risk of suicide to keep safe and access further support. \n“It was excellent to practice having the conversation with someone at risk. It assisted in my confidence\, and language used to minimise the negative connotations to suicidality but emphasise their struggle.” \nSuitable for anyone above the age of 16\, anyone can learn the skills to intervene and save a life from suicide. We deliver suicide prevention training workshops to mental health and welfare organisations\, emergency services\, community groups\, corporate businesses\, and individuals. \nTraining is delivered over two consecutive days at our head office in Hawthorn East. DESCRIPTION:The Standard MHFA Refresher Course is designed to help current Accredited MHFAiders maintain their certification and stay up to date with the latest mental health first aid knowledge\, skills\, and information. \nParticipants will engage in up-to-date research\, practice complex scenarios\, and extend their accreditation for another three years upon successful completion of a short assessment. \n\n  \n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nThis internationally recognised workshop is evidence based and informed by lived experience. Participants will:  \n\n\nUnderstand the latest research in mental health\,\nNavigate complex mental health first aid scenarios\,\nPractice and enhance mental health first aid skills\, discuss challenges\, and share knowledge.\n\n  \nEligibility\nTo enrol in the Refresher Course\, participants must have completed a full MHFA course and passed the accreditation assessment within the last three years. The Standard Refresher course is available to current and accredited MHFAiders who completed the following courses: \n\nStandard MHFA\nOlder Person MHFA\nBlended/Online Community or Workplace\nFinancial Services\, Legal Professionals or Pharmacy MHFA\nTertiary\n\nParticipants are required to bring their own Fourth Edition manual and need to provide a copy of their Certificate of Accreditation to our team prior to the training. This year’s Showcase focuses on the current challenges faced by our children and emphasises how everyone can contribute to this important community effort. Our presenters include preschool professionals\, psychologists\, and researchers who will share their valuable insights. SUMMARY:Supervisor Master Class - September 2025
DESCRIPTION:Following many years of successful provision of supervision and supervision training – we are now able to offer free Master Class refresher training for registered psychologists until 2026. \nThis funding is provided by the Australian Federal Government\, Department of Health and Aged Care in-line with meeting the aims to support and increase the capacity of the psychology workforce.   \nPriority places will be given to psychologists supporting First Nations people\, children and youth\, those from CALD communities\, and practitioners working in community mental health settings or regional\, rural\, and remote areas (located in MMM3-7). Further\, supervisors will receive an incentive payment to assist with attending the training.  \n\nAbout The Training\nThis is a one-day workshop suitable for Psychology Board of Australia-approved supervisors wishing to maintain their supervisor status\, and seeking to update their supervisor skills. \nSuitable for those providing peer supervision to qualified psychologists and other mental health professionals and Higher Degree psychology students\, this workshop will be delivered by an experienced trainer and will provide supervisors with an opportunity to reflect on their current practice and broaden their knowledge\, skill and training in the area of supervision.  \nThe workshop will include experiential exercises and involve a competency-based assessment. This course constitutes 6 hours of CPD. \n  \nLearning Objectives\n\nIntroduction to Supervision\,\nSelf-reflective practice for the supervisor and supervisee\,\nEvaluating supervisees\,\nProviding feedback.\n\nOnce you have successfully completed a Board approved refresher training program you can apply to maintain your approval for another five years from the date you completed the training using form MBAS-76. You must complete the refresher training and lodge your MBAS-76 form with AHPRA before the expiry date of your current approval; otherwise your approval will lapse. \n  \nImportant Information\n \nThis workshop is subject to receiving a minimum number of enrolments. DESCRIPTION:This two-day introductory course is aimed at individuals who are either: 1) currently working in a role assisting growth and development in others and would like to further develop their skills\, or\, 2) interested in learning more about counselling and potentially looking to take the first step towards a new career. \nIn this program\, participants will learn the core counselling skills required to become effective in assisting clients to build strengths and resilience\, and strategies for positive change. DESCRIPTION:Approximately 20% of Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Completing a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Course will help you to develop the skills to support a friend\, family member or co-worker. \nIn this informative and practical course\, you will learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults\, how to provide initial help\, where and how to get professional help\, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective\, and how to provide mental health first aid in a crisis situation using a practical\, evidence-based action plan. \nMental health first aid skills learnt by participants in this course can be applied in any setting. Course content includes case-studies\, videos and resources tailored to the learning needs of community/public course participants. \nContent was clear\, engaging and easily comprehendible. I think the trainer summed up hours’ worth of my psychology degree in 5hrs and went beyond by giving me the confidence to apply it. SUMMARY:Training the Effective Supervisor - September 2025
DESCRIPTION:Following many years of successful provision of supervision and supervision training – we are now able to offer free Supervisor Foundation training for registered psychologists until 2026. \nThis funding is provided by the Australian Federal Government\, Department of Health and Aged Care in-line with meeting the aims to support and increase the capacity of the psychology workforce. \nPriority places will be given to psychologists supporting First Nations people\, children and youth\, those from CALD communities\, and practitioners working in community mental health settings or regional\, rural\, and remote areas (located in MMM3-7). Supervisors who successfully complete all three components of the training\, will be invited to complete a quick post-training survey allowing us to gather workforce data on our funded training initiatives. Completion of this survey will receive a VISA gift card of $300. \n\nAbout The Training\nThe Cairnmillar Institute is a Psychology Board of Australia-approved supervisor training provider. We deliver all three components of the training required for eligible psychologists to apply for Board Approved Supervisor (BAS) status. The 32 hours of training is presented in three distinct and stipulated component parts: \n\nKnowledge Assessment (Component One)\nSkills Training (Component Two)\nAssessment and Evaluation (Component Three)\n\nThe course is suitable for psychologists who are seeking BAS status. BAS status is required for all supervisors who provide primary\, secondary\, or field placement supervision for: \n\nprovisionally registered psychologists (e.g.\, via 4+2\, 5+1 or higher degree pathways); and/or  \nregistrars (undertaking registrar program for area of practice endorsement).   \n\n  \nLearning Outcomes\nParticipants will gain the knowledge and skills to provide competency-based supervision to provisional psychologists and/or registrars undertaking: \n\nA 4+2 internship program\nA 5+1 internship program\nAn accredited higher degree program\nA Registrar program\, leading to area-of-practice endorsement.\n\nParticipant learning outcomes include developing:  \n\nGreater knowledge and skills in the competency-based model of supervision \nEffective supervision practices and recognising how to set supervision up for success \nKnowledge and skills in establishing and managing the supervisory relationship\, including responding to ruptures\, conflict\, or problems  \nThe ability to assess and evaluate the psychological competencies of the supervisee\, including identifying any progress concerns \nThe ability to evaluate the supervisory process.\n\nUpon completion of all components\, participants are required to submit the following registration form to the Psychology Board for professional recognition. \n  \nEligibility\nPsychologists are eligible to enrol if they have: \n\nHeld general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia for at least 2.5 years\, and/or\nHeld an area of practice endorsement for at least two years (to supervise registrars and some Higher Degree field placements).\n\n\nOur Trainer\nDr Renzo Vittorino\nRenzo is the Course Director of the Graduate Internship Program at The Cairnmillar Institute. DESCRIPTION:Enhance your psychological toolkit with our PAI workshop\, designed for psychologists at any career stage. From foundational interpretation to advanced applications\, gain practical experience and refine your strategies for clinical diagnosis\, treatment planning and screening for psychopathology.\n\nThe Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is a self-administered\, objective test of personality and psychopathology. It is widely used clinically in Australia and is one of the critical tests that trainee psychologists must be familiar with for the National Psychology Exam. Our dual professional development workshop is designed to address the needs of psychologists with varying levels of experience. \nThe day-long workshop begins with a review of the key features and elements of the PAI suitable for those who have limited exposure or who are looking to refresh their skills. While this is intended to provide you with foundational knowledge and interpretative strategies to elevate your skills in deciphering the complexities of psychopathology\, advanced content will also be presented in relation to the application of the test in the Australian context.  Additionally\, a structural approach to interpreting and reporting the findings of the PAI will be discussed. \nAdvanced or more contemporary content will also be reviewed particularly with respect to the suite of measures that have become available since the release of the PAI Plus. These additional measures which include scales for assessing validity\, suicide and violence risk\, need for hospitalisation\, and the DSM-5 alternate model for personality disorders will be critically evaluated for the roles they may play in PAI interpretation. Some additional measures from the research literature will also be reviewed. \nLearning Outcomes\nFor those attending for foundation or refresher purposes\, this workshop will introduce participants to the PAI and discuss its structure and application with clients. The workshop will cover basic interpretive strategy including determining the validity of a profile\, clinical scale elevations\, and the use of configural interpretations and indices to enhance the role and interpretation of the test. Attendees will acquire a more critical and nuanced understanding of the roles the test plays in their clinical practices. In addition to reviewing the additional measures and approaches that have been recently introduced\, critical evaluation of their incremental validity will assist in determining which would be appropriate for adoption or exclusion. \nAt the end of this workshop participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the structure of the PAI.\nUnderstand how to determine the validity of a PAI profile and its implications for interpretation.\nAddress normal range personality issues such as self-perception\, interpersonal style\, perception of environment\, and treatment motivation.\nInterpret clinical scale elevations.\nEnhance evaluations of response bias\, risk of harm to self and others\, and treatment considerations through the use of indices and statistical algorithms.\nUnderstand the relationship between the PAI and the role it can play in assisting in diagnosis.\nUnderstand and undertake more detailed evaluations of protocol validity including inconsistency\, defensiveness\, and over-reporting.\nApply appropriate additional measures for the assessment of risk of harm to self and others and the assessment of personality disorders using the alternate dimensional model.\nImplement a structural approach to PAI interpretation and reporting and employ a hierarchical approach to personality assessment that places the PAI in its broader clinical context.\nUnderstand the cautions and limitations in using profile analysis with the PAI.\n\nThis workshop will be available in a hybrid format allowing attendees to join both online or face-to-face at 391-393 Tooronga Road\, Hawthorn East VIC 3123.\nEligibility\nThe day-long workshop is suitable for provisional or registered psychologists who have had limited exposure to the PAI or those who are looking to refresh their skills. Also suitable for board approved supervisors looking to increase their knowledge of the PAI for supervisory purposes. \nOur Trainer\nAssoc Prof Graeme Senior \nDr Graeme Senior is an associate lecturer in the Faculty of Psychology\, Counselling and Psychotherapy at The Cairnmillar Institute (CMI) teaching Advanced Assessment for Clinical Psychologists. Dr Senior is a US-trained psychologist who has been working as a clinician\, academic\, and researcher in Australia since 1993. \nMuch of the consultancy and clinical work he has done as an academic and private practitioner is specific to addressing clinical\, forensic\, and neuropsychological issues with psychological test data. Component One and Component Three are online courses. Participants must achieve a minimum overall score of 90% in the assessments to pass this component and to be eligible to register for Component Two.\nThis component constitutes 10 hours of coursework and CPD.\nYou may commence Component One at any time\, once full payment has been received and upon confirmation of your enrolment.\nTo enrol in this component only\, please select the ‘Component One Only’ ticket option.\nComponent Two (Skills Training Workshop)\nThe Component Two workshop is conducted over two consecutive days (Day 1: 9am-4.30pm; Day 2: 9.30am-4.30pm).\nComponent One is a prerequisite for this workshop however does not need to be completed at the same provider.\nWorkshops are offered either online or face-to-face onsite at The Cairnmillar Institute in Hawthorn East\, Victoria.\nComponent Two constitutes 12 hours of coursework and CPD.\nPlease note – catering is not provided for our face-to-face courses\, however\, there are kitchen facilities available for participant’s use.\nComponent Three (Assessment and Evaluation)\nThis is the final assessment component of the BAS training. It involves submission of a 50-minute recording of a supervision session\, together with a 1\,000-word self-assessment essay.  Guidelines for the submission requirements will be provided and align with the Component Two training.\nComponents One and Two are prerequisites for this course. DESCRIPTION:This is a one-day workshop suitable for Psychology Board of Australia-approved supervisors wishing to maintain their supervisor status\, and seeking to update their supervisor skills.\nSuitable for those providing peer supervision to qualified psychologists and other mental health professionals and Higher Degree psychology students. \nThis workshop will be delivered by an experienced trainer and will provide supervisors with an opportunity to reflect on their current practice and broaden their knowledge\, skill and training in the area of supervision. \n\nThe workshop will include experiential exercises and involve a competency-based assessment. \nThis course constitutes 6 hours of CPD. \nLearning Objectives\n\nIntroduction to Supervision\,\nSelf-reflective practice for the supervisor and supervisee\,\nEvaluating supervisees\,\nProviding feedback.\n\nOnce you have successfully completed a Board approved refresher training program you can apply to maintain your approval for another five years from the date you completed the training using form MBAS-76. You must complete the refresher training and lodge your MBAS-76 form with AHPRA before the expiry date of your current approval; otherwise your approval will lapse. \nImportant Information\n \nPlease note\, this course is subject to receiving a minimum number of enrolments and conditional to Government restrictions implemented at the time of the course. In the case we are unable to deliver the course face-to-face\, the course will be transferred to online delivery via zoom. SUMMARY:If Everyone Cared: Celebrating the Legacy of Aunty Margaret Tucker (MBE)
DESCRIPTION:Please note: the links contained here contain images of deceased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  \n  \nWe have much to learn about the unique experiences of Indigenous people\, and the resilience and wisdom that they have accumulated over tens of thousands of years. Elders are a major repository of such knowledge. Cairnmillar therefore invites you to attend its NAIDOC related event to celebrate the theme of ‘For Our Elders’. \nFew individuals have had the impact of Aunty Margaret Tucker (OBE) (1904-1996)\, who after being forcibly removed from her family at the age of 13\, became a fierce advocate for multiple Indigenous issues concerning a more equal and fair society for all\, which still resonate today. Join us for a discussion about the ‘Lousy Little Sixpence’\, a documentary which details some of the struggles and victories faced by Aunty Margaret. \nWe are particularly fortunate to have relatives of Aunty Margaret joining us for this event\, who will give us their lived experience and/or personal perspectives on the life of Aunty Margaret\, and the issues she experienced and fought for. \n  \nTania Rossi \nA proud Yorta Yorta/Wiradjuri woman who has been raised by a very strong lineage of Aboriginal women who have pathed her way to where she is today. Tania is currently employed with The Koorie Heritage Trust where she Facilitates in the Building of Aboriginal Competency through Cultural Awareness workshops that include the development of awareness of Aboriginal culture and identity\, and developing awareness of the strengths of Aboriginal culture and people. \nShe started at the Wellness Foundation in 2016 as a mentor for girls aged from 12 to 15 then was promoted to Program Manager and Managed 5 Programs to them take over acting CEO role for 2yrs. In 2020 Tania took over the acting CEO role for two years and managed to get the Foundation and community through two years of Covid. Tania also worked for World vision with a Program called Young Mob during 2015 -2017. Young Mob programs offer experiences to Aboriginal and Tores Strait Islander students from NSW to VIC. It connects them with their culture and reinforces their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Identity. \nSenior Elder Aunty Zeta Thomson \nA Yorta Yorta and Wurundjeri woman who is highly regarded both locally and nationally. Aunty Zeta’s mother (Geraldine Briggs\, OA) and father (Selwyn Briggs) are both highly regarded Aboriginal advocates in their own rights\, being involved in watershed events such as the 1967 Referendum\, and establishing the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (see here for details). Aunty Zeta is the niece of Aunty Margaret. \nContinuing the work of the warriors within her family who have preceded her\, Aunty Zeta has devoted her life to community\, including (but not limited to) teaching language and culture at Worawa Aboriginal College (a boarding school for Indigenous girls\, located in Healesville)\, being an advocate for Aboriginal prisoners by providing cultural programs at the Malmsbury and Parkville Detention Centres\, and serving (or having served) on the Regional Aboriginal Justice Committee\, the Koorie Justice Forum\, the Victoria Police Koori Reference Group\, and the Women’s Correctional Services Advisory Committee. Since 2006\, she has also been a monthly volunteer for the Independent Visitors Prisoner Scheme\, reporting to the Victorian Minister for Corrections. Aunty Zeta has also made substantial contributions to women’s health via her roles in the Women’s Family Circle Program\, emphasising principles of holistic healing via a focus on spiritual\, physical and mental health in the wider context of social and emotional wellbeing. These roles are but just some examples of her tireless advocacy\, all of which contributed to her induction into the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll (2019). \nAunty Zeta is also a renowned artist\, with exhibitions across Australia and internationally\, including Melbourne Museum\, Arts Centre Melbourne\, and Parliament House (Sydney)\, and as a Melbourne Art Tram. Most recently\, her work was exhibited in the Rising Festival\, as part of the Shadows Spirit showcase.
