SUMMARY:Core Counselling Skills - August 2026
DESCRIPTION:This three-day introductory course is designed for individuals who are either currently supporting the growth and development of others and wish to enhance their skills\, or those considering a career in counselling and looking for a first step. \nParticipants will develop core counselling skills essential for helping clients build resilience\, strengths\, and strategies for positive change. Through interactive exercises and guided role-plays\, students will apply key counselling techniques while gaining hands-on experience in ethical\, client-centered practice. \nThe course explores the connection between our inner cognitive and emotional lives and how they shape daily experiences and long-term decisions. From this foundation\, participants will learn practical approaches to empower clients\, foster self-awareness\, and promote self-acceptance. \nPlease note: This course provides an introduction to counselling principles but does not qualify participants to work professionally as a counsellor. \n  \nLearning Objectives\n\nVia a mix of group learning\, role-plays\, exercises and education sessions\, following the completion of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nDistinguish between counselling and coaching.\nDemonstrate psychological safety in practice.\nDemonstrate person-centred therapeutic alliance.\nPractice active listening skills.\nApply non-verbal communication.\nUnderstand and apply micro-skills: reflecting\, summarising\, paraphrasing\, check-ins.\nUnderstand challenging techniques.\nApply scale-ruler questions to assess needs\, relationships and decision-making.\nUnderstand the process of the adaptive self on authenticity and applications when working with clients.\nApply principals for working with change.\nUnderstand and apply a strengths- and values-based approach to client work.\nApply structured and unstructured goal-setting approaches with clients.\nUnderstand the concept of core emotions and emotional suppression and how to work at an emotional level with clients.\nUnderstand the concepts and application of gratitude and compassion.\nPractice and extend self-awareness in the counselling process.\n\nDepending on the needs and counselling experience of the group members\, the above learning objectives may be modified accordingly. \n  \n\nOur Trainer\nDr Renzo Vittorino\n\n\n\nRenzo is the Course Director of the Graduate Internship Program at The Cairnmillar Institute. Renzo has extensive leadership and clinical experience spanning over 30 years. He has experience in working with individual and families\, community\, and organisational development. Renzo has extensive experience in the development and delivery of programs and training in trauma informed practice including the recently implemented Trauma Informed Leadership Program delivered to managers of Area Mental Health Services in Victoria in partnership with Centre for Mental Health Learning and Department of Health. \n  \n\n\n\nImportant Information\n \nThis workshop is subject to receiving a minimum number of enrolments. SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid - August 2026
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 20% of Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Completing a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Course will help you to develop the skills to support a friend\, family member or co-worker. \nIn this informative and practical course\, you will learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults\, how to provide initial help\, where and how to get professional help\, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective\, and how to provide mental health first aid in a crisis situation using a practical\, evidence-based action plan. \nMental health first aid skills learnt by participants in this course can be applied in any setting. Course content includes case-studies\, videos and resources tailored to the learning needs of community/public course participants. \nContent was clear\, engaging and easily comprehendible. I think the trainer summed up hours’ worth of my psychology degree in 5hrs and went beyond by giving me the confidence to apply it. I have already recommended this course! \n\n  \n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nThis course covers common and disabling mental health problems and crisis situations. Participants learn how to apply mental health first aid to adults across a range of situations\, including:  \n\n\nDepression\nAnxiety\nPsychosis\nSubstance use problems\nSuicidal thoughts and behaviours\nPanic attacks\nNon-suicidal self-injury\nTraumatic events\n\nUpon completion of this course participants will be able to: \n\nRecognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in adults\,\nUse an evidence-based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation\,\nKnow the barriers to help-seeking and how to overcome these\,\nAssess for a range of crisis situations and provide initial support\,\nUnderstand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses\, risk factors and treatments and supports available\,\nApply self-care practices as a Mental Health First Aider.\n\n  \n\nOur Trainer\nDr Renzo Vittorino\n\n\n\nRenzo is the Course Director of the Graduate Internship Program at The Cairnmillar Institute.
