    1. Purpose of this Policy

    The Cairnmillar Institute (the Institute) as a self-accrediting higher education provider, is committed to the quality assurance of its courses.

    This policy sets out the process by which:

    1. A new course of study (course) and/or new units of study (units) are accredited for delivery by the Institute
    2. Major changes to existing courses and/or units are approved

    2. Scope

    2.1 This policy applies to all Cairnmillar Institute award courses for which the Institute holds TEQSA self-accrediting authority

    3. Responsibilities

    3.1 The course accreditation process is designed to ensure that all new courses and new units

    3.1.1. Are approved for delivery through the Institute academic governance process

    3.1.2. Comply with the Institute’s learning and teaching policies and procedures

    3.1.3. Meet regulatory standards with respect to quality of teaching and learning

    3.1.4. Advance the achievement of the Institute’s mission and commitments as set out in its Strategic Plan

    3.1.5. Are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework and relevant professional standards

    3.1.6. Undergo regular evidence-based review for continual improvement

    3.2 A course is accredited for seven (7) years after which it will undergo re-accreditation every 7 years

    3.3 A course will be subject to an annual course review, and major course review at least once in each accreditation cycle.

    3.4 Course accreditation and re-accreditation are conducted through the course accreditation procedure

    3.5 For a proposed new course, a strategic and business case must be approved by the
    Institute Council prior to accreditation being sought

    3.6 Responsibilities

    3.6.1. Academic Board is responsible for the approval and quality assurance of all proposed and revised courses

    3.6.2. Course Standards Committee (CSC) is responsible for ensuring compliance with Academic Institute policies and external standards (Higher Education Standards Framework and relevant professional bodies)

    3.6.3. The Faculty is responsible for:

      1. Developing proposals for new courses or revisions to existing courses
      2. Establishing, for each course, a Course Advisory Committee (CAC) that is subject to the Institute Course Advisory Committee Terms of Reference
      3. The annual and major course reviews of all higher education award course offerings at the Institute
      4. Facilitating reviews by professional accreditation bodies as required
      5. Appointing course coordinators and teams to develop and review their appointed courses in accordance with relevant external standards
      6. Appointing course assessment panels

    3.6.4. Course coordinators are responsible for:

      1. The continual evidence-based development of their course
      2. Facilitating regular course team meetings to ensure course units are well aligned with course learning outcomes
      3. Facilitating an assessment panel to ensure the quality of unit assessments according to the Institute Assessment Policy and relevant procedures
      4. Ensuring course and unit changes are in accordance with relevant external standards and are subject to the Institute course approval processes (including review by the CAC)

    3.6.5. Unit coordinators are responsible for:

      1. The continual evidence-based development of their unit
      2. Reviewing unit assessments to ensure currency, relevance, and minimising risk of breaches of academic integrity
