1. Purpose of this Policy
The Cairnmillar Institute (the Institute) aims to ensure that all human research is undertaken with respect, integrity, honesty, and professionalism according to Institute values.
2. Scope
2.1. This policy applies to research undertaken by the Institute staff, students, or honorary associates.
2.2. According to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2023 | NHMRC human research refers to any research conducted with or about people, their tissue, or their data. Human research can include human involvement in any of the following:
- Taking part in surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
- Undergoing psychological, physiological, or medical testing or treatment.
- Being observed by researchers.
- Researchers having access to their personal documents or other material .
- The collection and use of their body organs tissues, fluid, or exhaled breath.
- Access to their information (in individually identifiable, re-identifiable or non-identifiable form), as part of an existing published or unpublished source or database.

3. Policy
3.1. institute will uphold its core values and commitment to a culture of integrity and good conduct in the development and undertaking of human research by:
- Ensuring that the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), a standing committee of the Institute is constituted according to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2023 | NHMRC.
- Reviewing an annual report prepared by the HREC.
3.2. The HREC will:
- Ensure that any human research undertaken by the Institute staff, students or honorary associates is designed and conducted in accordance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research; and is ethically reviewed and monitored in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (NSECHR).
- Maintain Guidelines and Procedures that inform the working of HREC and are updated according to the current NSECHR.
