Graduate Diploma vs Graduate Certificate of Psychological Science — Which Is Right for You?

graduate diploma vs graduate certificate

Cairnmillar Institute offers two online psychology pathways for domestic students in Australia — the Graduate Certificate of Psychological Science (PY085) and the Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science (PY084). The Graduate Certificate is designed to strengthen your WAM for Honours entry. The Graduate Diploma is a bridging course for those changing careers into psychology from any undergraduate background.

Two Courses, Two Different Purposes

These two courses are not the same. They serve different goals and suit different people. Here is a clear breakdown of what each one is for.

What Is the Graduate Certificate of Psychological Science? (PY085)

Course Code: PY085 Duration: 6 months full-time or 1 year part-time Study Mode: Online Intake: Semester 1 and Semester 2 Fees: $11,850.32* (domestic only) FEE-HELP: Available Minimum WAM to apply: None required Accreditation: TEQSA accredited — AQF Level 8

The Graduate Certificate of Psychological Science is designed for two specific groups of people.

The first group is those who have already completed an APAC-accredited undergraduate psychology degree but want to improve their results for entry into the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Cairnmillar. If your undergraduate WAM was not strong enough to progress directly to Honours, this course gives you the opportunity to demonstrate what you are capable of at postgraduate level.

The second group is those who hold any Australian undergraduate degree at AQF Level 7 but do not yet meet the entry requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science. This course provides an alternative pathway into the Graduate Diploma via a fast-tracked 4-unit sequence of study.

There is no minimum WAM requirement to apply — making this one of the more accessible entry points into postgraduate psychology study in Australia.

The Honours pathway: Students who complete the Graduate Certificate with a WAM of 65 or higher, including a mark of 65 or higher in PSY402, will automatically be offered a place in the Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science at Cairnmillar, with recognition of prior learning for the four completed units.

Total fees are estimates only. Annual tuition fee review and possible increases apply.

What Is the Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science? (PY084)

Course Code: PY084 Duration: 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time Study Mode: Online Intake: Semester 1 and Semester 2 Fees: $24,885* (domestic only) FEE-HELP: Available Accreditation: TEQSA and APAC accredited — AQF Level 8

The Graduate Diploma of Psychological Science is a one-year bridging program designed for people who hold an AQF Level 7 undergraduate degree in any field of study and want to pursue a career or further study in psychology.

You do not need a background in psychology to apply. If you have a degree in another discipline entirely — business, education, health, law, or anything else — and you want to transition into psychology, this is the course that opens that door. It is a fast-tracked 8-unit sequence that meets the requirements for a foundational sequence of training in psychology.

Graduates from this course are eligible to apply for an APAC-accredited fourth year of study in psychology, such as the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Cairnmillar.

The Honours pathway: Students who receive a WAM of 70 or higher and a mark of 65 or higher in either PSY402 or PSY408 will automatically be offered a place in the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Cairnmillar. Those who receive a WAM below 70 can still apply for Honours through the standard pathways.

Total fees are estimates only. Annual tuition fee review and possible increases apply.
